Tech Notes
Immarsat BGAN terminals and ACCESS
There have been exciting advances in satellite terminal technology of late. The most recent Inmarsat technology is known as BGAN. Terminals capable of using this service are radically smaller than previous equipment. The ACCESS has been extensively tested on this service and can be configured to work well on a 32 kb/s streaming service. This brings the cost per minute down to about $2-3/minute, making this technology accessible to a wider variety of users. Using ACCESS and BGAN truly allows remotes to be delivered from anywhere without wires.
Comrex engineers have cooperated with a technical team from Inmarsat as well as with BGAN terminal manufacturer, Thrane & Thrane. The Thrane Explorer 500 terminal has been tested and Comrex is very pleased with the results using this terminal. Thrane & Thrane have produced a document describing how to configure the Explorer 500 terminal for use with ACCESS,
which may be downloaded here.
