The Boston Frenzy was an expansion minor league basketball team based about 45 minutes south of the city in Dartmouth, MA. The off-season started promisingly for the infant franchise. Advertising revenue was promised by a third party with top notch credentials, players from all around the country including three nationally televised streetball stars were on their way to camp, and the father of Kobe Bryant, Joe "Jellybean" an 8-year NBA vet himself was on board to coach. The stories were in place and I found my way into the broadcast booth, excited about the season to come.
Then things went south. The advertising revenue came in a trickle, no deluge like promised. Wallets started to tighten up and the third party charged with buying our radio time quickly found the back door leaving us weeks away from the season opener with no money, no radio agreement, and worse, no equipment.
Somehow we were able to get in front of a radio group again and work out a deal where we gave up just about all of our possible ad revenue in return for air time. So we were on! But how to connect to the station? Their Hotline was almost always in use, and though I owned a mixer, mic's, and headset personally, a top-notch codec was NOT in my personal price range.
That's when we contacted Comrex. And they came to the rescue with a Matrix! That little box saved our broadcast season. Using a simple gym phone line the Matrix held up amazingly well compared to the terrible line quality for which Dartmouth is infamous. With the exception of two games when we had to struggle with the bit rate to accomodate the poor phone line, the quality was crystal clear and our fledgling team got the coverage a pro sports franchise deserves. Thank you Comrex for saving our butts and our broadcast season.
